Every year, more than 1500 children are reported abused and neglected in Chemung, Schuyler, and Steuben Counties. To raise awareness of alarming statistics like these, CASA of the Southern Tier, Inc. will host a brunch on December 12th from 10:00 am until 2:00 at Castel Grisch Winery and Restaurant on Irelandville Rd., Watkins Glen, NY.

All proceeds will benefit the children in our community. Tickets are $20/person, $10/child, gratuity and alcohol not included. Table and time reservations must be made in advance, so please call 535-9614 to reserve your seat today. Please call the CASA office at (607) 936-CASA (2272) for your tickets in advance, or they may be purchased at the door but reservations are required.

Annual Meeting: Cornell Cooperative Extension

The Annual Meeting of the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Schuyler County Association (RSVP's sponsoring agency), scheduled for Thursday, December 2, 7:30-9 a.m., will feature Dr. Jennifer Wilkins, Sr. Extension Associate with Cornell University’s Division of Nutritional Sciences, who will speak on “Local Food for Healthy People and Strong Communities.” A flyer is attached with more information.

The Annual Meeting is open to the public and will include a full breakfast, short business meeting with election of members to the Board of Directors, and our featured speaker. UPDATE: Schuyler County Transit

Effective Monday, November 15, Schuyler County Transit has made the following changes at the specific sites listed:

Jefferson Village Apartments, Watkins Glen: After the stop at Seneca Harbor Park, Schuyler County Transit vehicles will stop at Jefferson Village Apartment’s main entrance on Second Street. Anyone wishing to ride the bus may now wait by the main entrance on Second Street to flag the bus to stop.

Sydney Place Apartments, Odessa: In addition to picking people up at the Odessa Municipal Building stop, the bus will continue to Sydney Place Apartments and loop through the parking lot. Riders should be waiting outside the main entrance to flag the bus to stop.

Romeo Village Apartments, Montour Falls: Buses will stop on Broadway Street directly across from Romeo Village Apartment’s main driveway entrance. Riders may wait at the end of the driveway of Romeo Village Apartments to flag the bus to stop.

Riders should use the scheduled times listed for the Seneca Harbor Park, Odessa Municipal Building and Broadway Street stops accordingly to plan bus arrivals and departures.

American Mobile Dental Van was such a huge success in Schuyler County that they are planning on returning in the Spring. They will come and park by the Head Start shed at the Schuyler Human Services Complex but ANYONE can be seen those days. The dates are April 20, May 18, June 29, July 27 and August 24. (All Wednesdays) They take all insurances, including Medicaid, will work with private pay or the uninsured. Appointments can be made by calling American Mobile Dental at 1-877-24-tooth.

Session I gives participants the skills and strategies for helping others to communicate effectively and resolve conflicts peacefully and constructively. It serves as a prerequisite for Session II and is open to the public.

Session II focuses on mediating specialized situations and is open to anyone who has successfully completed Session I. The completion of both sessions prepares participants for advancing on course toward full qualification as a CDRC-certified mediator.

PERSONAL EMERGENCY RESPONSE SYSTEMS (PERS)

Information and Listings

Personal Emergency Response System (PERS), or medical signaling device is an answer to the need for both security and independence. It is a simple way to call for help from a friend, relative, or emergency services (police, fire department, or ambulance). If a user needs help, he/she simply presses a button, which sends a message into an emergency response center. Information about his/her medical history and names and phone numbers of contact people is quickly available. The emergency response center will talk with the user to determine the reason they were contacted, and will respond appropriately. Companies who sell this product are listed under “Medical Alarms” in the yellow pages of the phone book.

The Federal Trade Commission recommends the following precautions when ordering PERS services:

· Check out several systems before making a decision.

· Ask about the pricing, features, and servicing of each system, and compare costs.

· Make sure that the system is easy to use. Buttons should be easy to operate and batteries easy to change.

· Ask whether the monitoring center is available 24 hours a day, what kind of training its operators receive, and what the average response time is.

· Test to be sure that the system works from every point in and around your home. Make sure nothing interferes with transmissions.

· If unsure of a company's reputation, check with the Better Business Bureau.

· Read the written agreement carefully before signing it.

The Alzheimer's Foundation is seeking families caring for loved ones with Alzheimer's or related dementias who would be interested in testing a new locator device at no charge.

Dear Friend,

As you well know, wandering is an enormous concern for individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, and their families-and we are committed to finding solutions to this problem.

We're excited to let you know that the Alzheimer's Foundation of America is teaming up with Breadcrumb, a technology company, with the intent of marketing a new, innovative locator device specifically designed for individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias who may wander. To move this forward, we are currently seeking individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related illnesses, and their family caregivers to participate in a free, 30-day pilot project.

We ask that you help us locate interested participants by spreading the word about this important project. As a thank you, participants will be able to continue to use the locator device for one year at no cost (a value of approximately $600+).

Breadcrumb is a small wristband-type device strapped to the individual, and uses a cellular system to identify the location of a participant who wanders out of doors and to display the person's route and real time location on a map or Smartphone. The device regularly reports the person's location to the Breadcrumb call center around the clock, and pre-identified caregivers are notified via text message and/or phone call when the person leaves a designated geographic field.

We will provide participants with the system and operating instructions, and ask that they use the system for 30 days and fill out pre-, mid- and post-surveys, as well as data for the call center.

Specifically, we are seeking a diverse group of participants: residing at home in urban/rural areas from coast to coast, various ethnic backgrounds, various ages, male/female, various stages of the disease, etc.

Energy Volunteers Needed

Schuyler County Cooperative Extension is looking for 3-4 volunteers to be trained by Cornell University and the EnergySmart Communities Coordinator to conduct basic home energy audits for Schuyler County residents. Volunteers will be part of a pilot program that will encourage homeowners to increase their energy efficiency and introduce all of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority’s financing options. Each volunteer will be expected to attend four half day trainings in Elmira (transportation provided) and conduct 2 home energy audits (locations will be provided). Other than the trainings, this is a very flexible program and can fit into anyone’s schedule. No prior experience necessary. Trainings will be held on October 25, November 1, 8, 15 from 9:00 pm- 1:00 pm. Take-Back Message to DEA Employees

As part of DEA’s effort to combat rising prescription drug abuse, we are spearheading the first-ever National Prescription Drug Take-back campaign, which will take place at more than 3,700 locations across the country this Saturday, September 25th, from 10 am to 2 pm.

We are asking all Americans to empty their family medicine cabinets of unwanted or expired prescription drugs, and bring them to one of our collection sites for environmentally safe and legal disposal… no questions asked.

Acting Administrator Michele M. Leonhart is scheduled to appear on a number of major morning shows this Friday, including NBC’s Today Show, and Fox and Friends, to deliver DEA’s take-back message directly to the American people.

DEA is also running a national media campaign to promote the Rx take-back initiative that includes TV and radio spots, newspaper ads, billboards and transit advertising in markets all over the country.

Please help DEA communicate this important message by telling your friends, family, and community members about this event and encouraging their participation.

We urge everyone to consult DEA.gov or their local DEA office to find out how the National Prescription Drug Take-back will be rolled out in their communities, and where they can go to dispose of their unwanted medications.

Did you know that medication interactions are a leading cause of falls for seniors 60 years of age and older? Community based adults over the age of 65 who experienced a fall within the past year were more likely to be taking more than 4 prescribed medications.

Wouldn’t you like to know if your prescription and over the counter medications could cause you to fall? ProAction Yates Office for the Aging, Yates County Public Health, and Yates County Emergency Management Services are conducting a Medication Review Event.
At this event, a local pharmacist will be evaluating your medications. You will also receive Falls Prevention education including home safety tips, and the sign ups for the Matter of Balance Falls Prevention Exercise class.

Please bring a list of your prescription and over the counter medications including the name of the medication, the dosage, the dosage instructions, the name of the prescriber, and what the medication is being taken for, to the event location of your choice:

Calling all Volunteers! Are you looking for a way you can help a child? Become a CASA Volunteer.
CASA volunteers are trained members of the community who advocate for abused and neglected children in family court. A volunteer follows a child’s cases as it moves through the family court system. The volunteer researches the case, learning everything they can about the child’s special situation. The CASA volunteer then makes recommendations to the judge on what’s best for the child’s future.

CASA of the Southern Tier, Inc. has set the dates for the CASA 101 Initial training.

Volunteers Needed: IMRRC

I'm sure you're wondering what IMRRC is, right? Well, let me tell you! IMRRC is the International Racing Research Center located in Watkins Glen and they are looking to find a lot of volunteers! They need Assistants (up to 20 volunteers) to help with the daily operation of the center and cleaners (1-2 volunteers) to help clean the facility, remove the trash, dust exhibits and help store items. See below for more details:

Front Desk/Greeter – The volunteer will be at the Research Center’s front desk to greet visitors, answer phones, and answer questions. Must have pleasant appearance and be cordial and professional to all visitors.

Docent/Guide – The volunteer will give guided tours of the Research Center, be able to answer detailed questions about exhibits and operate the audio/visual equipment. Must be articulate and familiar with the Research Center and its holdings and finding aids. Must have pleasant appearance and be cordial and professional to all visitors

Researcher - The volunteer will be familiar enough with information in databases and the physical archives to aide requestors in locating research items, photos, articles, etc., through email or personal inquiries, and provide photocopies as requested.

Data Entry – The volunteer will input data into various computer software programs, for purposes of bookkeeping, collection databases, etc. Must be PC literate and familiar with MS Office.

Cleaner/Floater – The volunteer will help keep the museum clean and presentable to the public. Help in storing of items, dusting, and removal of trash, etc.

Filing – The volunteer will keep research files up to date by adding to the files and keeping them alphabetized or indexed.

Special Event Aide – The volunteer will help at any of the Research Center’s fundraisers, programs, and other special events, including those at Watkins Glen International. They will help with set-up and take-down and interact with the public.

The Keuka Comfort Care Home in Penn Yan is looking for volunteers to provide end of life comfort care, including help with medications and personal care, to residents of Keuka Comfort Care Home. Also to provide emotional support to residents and family members.

Skills required: compassion, empathy, positive demeanor, ability to perform or assist with caregiving activities including feeding, grooming, repositioning, hygiene; ability to perform basic cooking and housekeeping activities; must be able to read, write and speak English.

Training: 4-part classroom style training (approximately 6-8 hours) followed by 2-3 shadowing experiences. Training to include information on communication, stress management, grief and spirituality, and hands-on caregiving.

Times/Dates Needed: Volunteers work in 4-hour shifts. Thursdays between 3:00 - 8:00 p.m.. Fridays between 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. periodically. Saturdays between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m.. In May 2010 the Alzheimer’s Association released a report that states, “the number of Americans age 65 and older who have this condition will increase from the 5.1 million today to 13.5 million by mid-century”.

More than 7 out of 10 people with Alzheimer’s disease live at home, where family and friends provide almost 75 percent of their care. Educational programs help caregivers discover strategies to cope with the complexities of caring for a person with the disease, along with gaining the knowledge and skills to be as prepared as possible.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) provides tax incentives for individuals to invest in energy-efficient products. Publication 4845 highlights some key points about the Nonbusiness Energy Property Credit and the Residential Energy Efficient Property Credit. Homeowners who have been considering some energy efficient home improvements may find these tax credits will result in bigger tax savings. Form 5695, Residential Energy Credits, is used to claim the credits.

Bone Builders Classes

Bone Builders classes resume this fall. These exercise classes are designed to help reduce the incidence of osteoporosis in men and women age 50 and older. Trained RSVP volunteers lead weekly classes, utilizing progressive weight-bearing exercises developed at Tufts University. These FREE classes will be offered at sites across Schuyler and Yates Counties.

Osteoporosis is a major public health threat for an estimated 44 million Americans, or 55 percent of people age 50 and older. While women are four times more likely than men to develop the disease, men can also suffer from osteoporosis. Those affected by osteoporosis cannot feel their bones getting weaker. They may not know they have it until they break a bone, often the result of a minor fall.

Bone Builder classes are recommended for men and women 55 and older to help reduce the chance of getting osteoporosis. Participants must have a signed release from their doctor to join. Call Schuyler-Yates RSVP at (607) 535-7105 for enrollment information. Space is limited.

Volunteers will shop at local stores for groceries, personal care items, prescriptions or other items as specified. Skills Required: Reliability, honesty, integrity, ability to stand for periods of time and walk long distances, reaching, bending, working with money (paying and receiving change), effectively communicating with clients with varying levels of function. Volunteers will use their own vehicles, but are able to claim mileage reimbursement by OFA at the County rate (currently 50 cents/mile). A motor vehicle screening is required for this assignment.

Shopping would generally be required on a weekly to bi-weekly basis.

Reporting hours, along with other data collection is federally mandated. As a federally-funded program, RSVP must abide by the accountability and compliance guidelines and standards set by governmental agencies.

This data also represents a statistical snapshot of what we are accomplishing with regard to the mission of RSVP — which is to engage volunteers in activities that will make a difference in our communities by meeting the needs of nonprofits and the people they serve. The data we collect is sent to legislators and other funders and helps them to determine allocation amounts for our program.

Reporting hours also verifies RSVP-registered volunteers have been active over the course of the fiscal year. Only those volunteers who are serving in the current year are eligible to enjoy the benefits of RSVP, e.g., supplemental insurance coverage, recognition events, the newsletters, etc.

Reporting hours keeps RSVP volunteers insured. The hours reported and signed by the volunteer and/or the volunteer supervisor is the only documentation we have that an individual is serving at a site or participating in a volunteer activity. If we have no written documentation, our supplemental insurance policy does not cover that volunteer in the event of injury.

Reporting hours helps local nonprofits tell their story of service to the community and to funders. Accurate records about the volunteers that serve at local sites allow local nonprofits to highlight the fact that they are utilizing volunteers to help provide their services. This represents a cost savings to already tightly-budgeted organizations, as well as in-kind match for their budgets. This leveraging of funds is critical — and potential funders look positively upon this wise and creative fiscal management.

RSVP, through its national efforts and marketing tools, promotes an image of today's seniors as active and contributing members of their communities. This helps to dispel the myths held by some that older adults are a drain on society — financially and otherwise. As a national network of over 500,000 volunteers and 750 projects, the RSVP program promotes expertise and advocacy for volunteerism by older adults. The more we can track, on a local level (and, by extension, a national level) the reality of the contributions of today’s volunteers, the more we help dispel the stereotypes surrounding aging.

Tracking volunteer data is a valuable tool in detailing and highlighting how volunteers impact a community, what they actually accomplish, and just how valuable they are to the operation of hundreds of nonprofit organizations, schools, and health care facilities in communities and cities nationwide. Without the tracking done by RSVP, the efforts of volunteers remain unidentified in any comprehensive way.

June 12th from 8am-11am at the Shared Services Building. First Ever Schuyler County Pharmaceutical Collection: The Health Department along with the Sheriff's Department and the WG Village Police, are sponsoring a collection day for unwanted and outdated medications. Acceptable materials include prescription and non-prescription medications (pills, tablets, capsules, liquids, patches and ointments). Medications should be brought, when possible, in their original containers with the patients name blacked out. This event is being organized as part of the Department of Environmental Conservation’s “Don’t Flush Your Drugs” campaign. A nationwide study done in 1999 and 2000 by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) found low levels of drugs such as antibiotics, hormones, contraceptives and steroids in 80% of the rivers and streams tested. Several other studies show that when pharmaceuticals are flushed down the toilet they end up in our water supplies leading to impacts on aquatic life such as feminization of fish and frogs as well as reduced fertility in certain species, ultimately leading to decreased biodiversity. I join President Obama in celebrating Older Americans Month. For 47 years, our nation has set the month of May aside to honor older Americans and acknowledge their continued contributions to our nation. Our theme for this year is "Age Strong! Live Long!" which recognizes the diversity and vitality of today's older Americans and highlights the importance of staying healthy throughout our lives.

To salute all older Americans and send a message about the importance of staying healthy and as independent as possible, AoA (Administration on Aging) is sponsoring a festive and fun one-mile walk and low-impact tai chi session with local older Americans in Washington, D.C on May 27. Other communities across the country will be holding similar events throughout the month. We have also conducted a national "My Recipe for Strength" contest which invites Americans to share what they are doing to age strong. CASA volunteers are trained members of the community who advocate for abused and neglected children in family court. A volunteer follows a child’s cases as it moves through the family court system. The volunteer researches the case, learning everything they can about the child’s special situation. The CASA volunteer then makes recommendations to the judge on what’s best for the child’s future.

Representatives from the VA Medical Center, Bath National Cemetery and Schuyler County Veterans Service Agency will be on hand to answer questions for Veterans and their families concerning eligibility for medical care, disability, education, pension, burial, and property tax exemption benefits. Overview

SafeTALK is a three-hour training that prepares anyone over the age of 16 to identify persons with thoughts of suicide and connect them to suicide first aid resources. Most people with thoughts of suicide invite help to stay safe. Alert helpers know how to use these opportunities to support that desire for safety. As a safeTALK-trained suicide alert helper, you will be better able to:

move beyond common tendencies to miss, dismiss or avoid suicide;
identify people who have thoughts of suicide;
apply the TALK steps (Tell, Ask, Listen and KeepSafe) to connect a person with suicide thoughts to suicide first aid, intervention caregivers.

Powerful video clips illustrate both non-alert and alert responses. Discussion and practice help stimulate learning. Learn steps that contribute to saving lives.

The Role of safeTALK in a suicide Safer Community

SafeTALK was designed to teach skills that completement caregivers with suicide intervention skills like those learned in ASIST, LivingWorks two-day workshop. SafeTALK-trained helpers make early recognition and referral possible on a far larger scale than any community can afford to do through suicide intervention skills training alone. When there are enough safeTALK-trained persons available, suicide intervention caregivers will be used more often.

The Finger Lakes Parkinson Disease Support Group will meet Thursday, March 18, 2010 at 1:30pm in the Silver Spoon Café at the Schuyler County Human Services Complex, 323 Owego Street in Montour Falls.

This month’s program features Sarah Champion, RN, MSN, FNPC, CUNP, of Gastroenterology Associates of Ithaca, PC who will address Gastrointestinal Issues and PD. Sarah will discuss dietary, medical, and supplementary treatments to provide relief. Sarah is a certified urology nurse practitioner and has worked in the health care field for 25 years.

The support group is open to individuals with Parkinson disease and their care partners/family members.

Carbon Monoxide

The Schuyler County Emergency Management Office would like to take the opportunity to clarify information regarding the recent law, known as “Amanda’s Law”, that went into effect on February 22, 2010. “Amanda’s Law” was named in honor of Amanda Hansen, a teenage girl who lost her life to carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning while sleeping over at a friend’s house in January of 2009. This new law requires that CO alarms be installed in all new and existing one and two family dwellings, multi-family dwellings and rental dwellings that have fuel-burning appliances, systems or an attached garage.

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas that can be fatal when inhaled. Because it is undetectable to human senses, it is sometimes called the “silent killer”. Carbon Monoxide is a by-product of combustion, so all fuel burning appliances produce carbon monoxide. When appliances become defective, are installed improperly, or misused, they can produce dangerous levels of carbon monoxide in the living areas of our homes. Furnaces, hot water heaters, gas stoves/ovens, gas clothes dryers, portable fuel-burning space heaters, fire places, wood stoves, and generators are all appliances that may malfunction and produce dangerous levels of Carbon Monoxide. In addition, a blocked chimney or flue, or operating a generator or vehicle inside closed spaces, can produce these elevated levels of Carbon Monoxide.

It is important to recognize the signs and symptoms of a carbon monoxide exposure. In a common mild exposure, symptoms may include slight headache, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, or flu like symptoms. In a medium exposure you may experience a throbbing headache, drowsiness, confusion, or a fast heart rate. In the most extreme exposures, carbon monoxide poisoning may lead to convulsions, unconsciousness, brain damage, heart and lung failure, and eventually, death.
If you or anyone in your home experience even mild carbon monoxide poisoning symptoms, you should consult a physician immediately. If anyone is experiencing these symptoms, it is important to move to fresh air.

The single most affective way to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning as a result of exposure to dangerous levels of carbon monoxide, is the proper installation of a CO detector in your home. Carbon Monoxide has very similar physical characteristics to the air that we breathe. Because of these similar characteristics, carbon monoxide will NOT collect in higher or lower areas of your home, but actually mix with the air in your home. It is recommended then, that if only one carbon monoxide detector is installed in the home, that it be placed in sleeping areas or in a hallway outside of the sleeping areas. Additional detectors may be placed on each level of the home and in utility areas where fuel-burning appliances are located. If placing them in a utility area, it is recommended that they be placed a minimum of 15 feet away from the fuel burning appliance. Attention should be made that they are NOT located in dead air spaces or next to doors or windows, as these spaces will not allow the detector to function properly. Placement can be made at a height that is easily reachable so that the detector batteries may be tested. Manufactures suggestions for placement, should be provided with literature included in packaging of the detector. Battery testing should be done monthly by depressing the test button on the detector.

If your carbon monoxide detector does sound an alarm and anyone is experiencing symptoms of carbon monoxide exposure, you should move everyone to fresh air and contact 911 from a neighbor’s house. If no one is experiencing symptoms, you should contact the local fire department or a qualified technician from a neighbor’s house, to have the problem checked. Under no circumstances should an alarm be ignored.

What is CARFIT for the Older Driver?

CARFIT is an educational program offered through AARP, in collaboration with older driver experts to provide older adults the       opportunity to check how well their personal
vehicles “fit” them.

CARFIT also provides information and materials on community specific resources that could   enhance their safety as drivers and/or increase their mobility in the community

Why is CARFIT Important?

Older drivers are often the safest drivers in that they are more likely to wear seatbelts, and less likely to speed or drink & drive, however, as we age, changes in our vision, flexibility, strength, range of motion and even size and height can make us less comfortable and reduce control behind the wheel. Older drivers are more likely to be killed or seriously injured when a crash does occur due to the greater fragility of their bodies.

How is a CARFIT check completed?

At a CARFIT event, a team of trained technicians an/or health professionals work with each    participant to ensure they “fit” their vehicle properly. A CARFIT check takes about 20 minutes to complete.

AARP knows that maintaining seniors safe on the road is vitally important to their          independence. CARFIT provides the senior driver with community traffic safety resources that can help keep them driving safely longer.

Anyone 17 years or older, weighing at least 110 pounds and in general good health may be eligible to donate blood. In New York State, 16-year-olds may donate blood provided they bring an original signed New York State Informed Parental Consent form for a 16-Year-Old to Donate Whole Blood. Appointments encouraged, walk-ins welcome and Identification is required.

State Official Offers Tips for Holiday Visits to Nursing Homes

New York State Long Term Care Ombudsman Mark Miller today released a list of helpful tips for people planning holiday visits to residents in nursing homes. As people travel home for the holidays, many nursing home residents will be eagerly awaiting a visit from family members and friends.   Miller notes that it is important to visitors, as well as the residents, to have these holiday visits be successful. Miller oversees the State Long Term Care Ombudsman Program that places volunteer ombudsmen in nursing homes and other long term care residential facilities across the state.

Visitors should plan ahead to make these visits rewarding for the resident and themselves. The Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program, a statewide advocacy service administered by the New York State Office for the Aging, advocates for persons living in long-term care facilities such as nursing homes, adult homes and other residential care facilities. The program has a corps of more than 1,000 trained volunteers who regularly visit these homes, promoting and protecting residents’ rights and resolving care-related concerns. New York’s State Ombudsman, Mark Miller, offers the following tips for families when visiting a loved one or friend in a nursing home:

•    Call ahead to arrange a time to visit that is best for the resident. If your schedule does not permit you to visit during normal visiting hours, talk with the resident and the facility social worker or administrator to arrange an alternate time to visit.

•    Bring the loved one home for a family meal, take them for a drive or to visit friends in the community as a way to share the holiday time. However, remember that trips outside the nursing home, whether for a few hours, the day or even overnight need to be prearranged and coordinated with both the resident and the home in order to ensure a safe and pleasant visit.

•    Ask the resident if he or she has any special needs such as personal items, clothing or other necessities that they would like.

•    Many residents had to leave their companion animals when they came to the nursing home. Ask the home about pet visits and limitations.

•    Many homes plan special holiday events or activities. Consider planning a visit at those times to share the event with your relative.

•    If you are visiting a friend or relative for the first time, understand that this may be an emotional visit. Many first-time or infrequent visitors experience mixed emotions. These typically include feeling nervous, guilty or angry. These feelings are normal. Give yourself time to become acclimated to the new surroundings. Get to know the staff, your loved one’s roommate and other residents. While children are always welcome visitors, realize that teenagers and older children may have a more difficult time during these visits and may need additional support and time to adjust.

•    Be attentive to the resident’s appearance and demeanor. Do they appear clean, appropriately dressed and well cared for? Ask about how they like the food and what activities they participate in, if any.

•    When visiting a family member or friend with dementia, be aware that those visits can be emotionally difficult and potentially unsatisfying. These residents may not be responsive which makes family member think that their effort to visit was in vain.

Michael Burgess, Director of the State Office for the Aging, where the Ombudsman Office is located said, “It is important to remember that when we make these holiday visits, residents not only look forward to them, they also feel better because of them. Visits throughout the year, not only at holiday time go a long way to improve residents’ lives.”

According to the State Ombudsman, complaints received by the program traditionally spike during the holidays when nursing home visits by families and friends tend to increase. If you are concerned about the care or treatment your loved one is receiving, or if they express complaints about their care remember the best place to solve most problems is right where you are --- in the facility. Try to clearly identify what the problem is then approach the administrator, Director of Nursing or facility social worker with your concern. Discuss possible solutions and ask when and how the concern will be addressed. If the problem remains unresolved the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program is there to help. The name and contact information for the local ombudsman is posted prominently in every nursing home. You can also find the local ombudsman on the web at www.ltcombudsman.ny.gov or by calling 1-800-342-9871. This is a free, confidential service.

Miller also noted that persons should consider giving a special gift to seniors that will last throughout the year by joining the Family Council of the nursing home or becoming a volunteer ombudsman. Free Christmas Dinner

The Moose Lodge in Montour Falls will be offering a free Christmas dinner for any and all who want to attend. It will be on 12/25/09 from noon-2:00 p.m. at the Moose Lodge. They will make deliveries as well but really need to know no later than noon that day but would prefer more advanced notice if possible. The phone number is 535-4741. The meal will consist of turkey, ham, potatoes and other goodies.
