CDRC Presents Professional Mediation Trainings

Session I: October 28, 29, & 30

Session II: November 4, 5, & 6

From 8:30 to 4:30 each day at the Catholic Charities Building, 215 E. Church St., 1^st floor conference room, Elmira, NY 14901

• Build personal and professional skills in communication, reflection, and conflict resolution

• Prepare yourself to volunteer as a CDRC-certified mediator equipped with the tools to help others in conflict to work through their disputes independently

• Experience the intensive, interactive instruction of lead trainer Judy Saul, a national leader in transformative mediation



Session I gives participants the skills and strategies for helping others to communicate effectively and resolve conflicts peacefully and constructively. It serves as a prerequisite for Session II and is open to the public.

Session II focuses on mediating specialized situations and is open to anyone who has successfully completed Session I. The completion of both sessions prepares participants for advancing on course toward full qualification as a CDRC-certified mediator.

• Both sessions are offered at no cost to participants committed to putting their new skills to work as volunteer mediators for CDRC

• Session I, perfect not only for aspiring mediators but also for professionals looking to hone their communication skills, costs $300 as a professional development workshop

• Note that for those seeking to volunteer with CDRC, a brief orientation prior to the workshop is also required, and there are several times to choose from for the orientation

Energy Volunteers Needed

Schuyler County Cooperative Extension is looking for 3-4 volunteers to be trained by Cornell University and the EnergySmart Communities Coordinator to conduct basic home energy audits for Schuyler County residents. Volunteers will be part of a pilot program that will encourage homeowners to increase their energy efficiency and introduce all of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority’s financing options. Each volunteer will be expected to attend four half day trainings in Elmira (transportation provided) and conduct 2 home energy audits (locations will be provided). Other than the trainings, this is a very flexible program and can fit into anyone’s schedule. No prior experience necessary. Trainings will be held on October 25, November 1, 8, 15 from 9:00 pm- 1:00 pm. Volunteer Needed: Alzheimer's Group Facilitator

Description

Guide participation of support group members, emphasizing group interaction and non-judgmental atmosphere for sharing with one another, utilizing educational materials provided by the Alzheimer's Association.

Skills

Alzheimer's Knowledge: Some knowledge of Alzheimer's disease ad the impact on families helpful, general care giving knowledge , comfort with the expression of emotions, active listening skills, ability to redirect and facilitate discussion. Non-judgmental/Confidential.

Requirements

Upcoming CASA Training

Calling all Volunteers! Are you looking for a way you can help a child? Become a CASA Volunteer.
CASA volunteers are trained members of the community who advocate for abused and neglected children in family court. A volunteer follows a child’s cases as it moves through the family court system. The volunteer researches the case, learning everything they can about the child’s special situation. The CASA volunteer then makes recommendations to the judge on what’s best for the child’s future.

CASA of the Southern Tier, Inc. has set the dates for the CASA 101 Initial training.

Be Sure to “Save the Dates”.

Volunteers Needed: IMRRC

I'm sure you're wondering what IMRRC is, right?  Well, let me tell you!  IMRRC is the International Racing Research Center located in Watkins Glen and they are looking to find a lot of volunteers!  They need Assistants (up to 20 volunteers) to help with the daily operation of the center and cleaners (1-2 volunteers) to help clean the facility, remove the trash, dust exhibits and help store items.  See below for more details:

Front Desk/Greeter – The volunteer will be at the Research Center’s front desk to greet visitors, answer phones, and answer questions. Must have pleasant appearance and be cordial and professional to all visitors.

Docent/Guide – The volunteer will give guided tours of the Research Center, be able to answer detailed questions about exhibits and operate the audio/visual equipment. Must be articulate and familiar with the Research Center and its holdings and finding aids. Must have pleasant appearance and be cordial and professional to all visitors

Researcher - The volunteer will be familiar enough with information in databases and the physical archives to aide requestors in locating research items, photos, articles, etc., through email or personal inquiries, and provide photocopies as requested.

Data Entry – The volunteer will input data into various computer software programs, for purposes of bookkeeping, collection databases, etc. Must be PC literate and familiar with MS Office.

Cleaner/Floater – The volunteer will help keep the museum clean and presentable to the public. Help in storing of items, dusting, and removal of trash, etc.

Filing – The volunteer will keep research files up to date by adding to the files and keeping them alphabetized or indexed.

Special Event Aide – The volunteer will help at any of the Research Center’s fundraisers, programs, and other special events, including those at Watkins Glen International. They will help with set-up and take-down and interact with the public.

Volunteers Needed: Wii Instructor

Do like to play games and have FUN?? This opportunity is just for you! The Schuyler County OFA is looking for 1-2 volunteers to teach different Wii games to the seniors attending the Montour Falls congregate meal site. This will take place prior to the meal (possibly 10:00- 11:30am). Volunteers will oversee the sign-in process and provide 1:1 or small group instruction.

Knowledge of Wii apparatus and variety of games or desire to learn the different games; reliability; punctuality; ability to stand for periods of time; reaching; bending; quick movements with arms and legs; effectively communicating with clients with varying levels of function; ability to demonstrate movements.

Volunteers Needed: Keuka Comfort Care Home

The Keuka Comfort Care Home in Penn Yan is looking for volunteers to provide end of life comfort care, including help with medications and personal care, to residents of Keuka Comfort Care Home.  Also to provide emotional support to residents and family members.

Skills required:  compassion, empathy, positive demeanor, ability to perform or assist with caregiving activities including feeding, grooming, repositioning, hygiene; ability to perform basic cooking and housekeeping activities; must be able to read, write and speak English.

Training:  4-part classroom style training (approximately 6-8 hours) followed by 2-3 shadowing experiences.  Training to include information on communication, stress management, grief and spirituality, and hands-on caregiving.

Times/Dates Needed:  Volunteers work in 4-hour shifts.  Thursdays between 3:00 - 8:00 p.m..  Fridays between 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. periodically.  Saturdays between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m..  Sundays between 11:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m..  Volunteer support on evenings and weekends are most needed.  Volunteer weekly or every other week.

Volunteers Needed: Shopping Assistants

Shopping Assistants are needed to assist Schuyler County residents who are unable to shop for themselves. Volunteers will shop at local stores for groceries, personal care items, prescriptions or other items as specified. Skills Required: Reliability, honesty, integrity, ability to stand for periods of time and walk long distances, reaching, bending, working with money (paying and receiving change), effectively communicating with clients with varying levels of function. Volunteers will use their own vehicles, but are able to claim mileage reimbursement by OFA at the County rate (currently 50 cents/mile). A motor vehicle screening is required for this assignment.

Shopping would generally be required on a weekly to bi-weekly basis.

Volunteers Needed: Sort of Back-To-School Giveaways

Catholic Charities would like more volunteers to help sort clothes the week of August 16-20 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and for the actual giveaway on Saturday, August 21st from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Volunteers Needed: Yates County Genealogical & Historical Society

The Yates County Genealogical and Historical Society is in need of two volunteers to do museum work. Volunteers will be asked to assist with routine museum inside and outside care and basic office work. Mobility and basic office skills are a must. Three hours in the am or pm per week are needed. Training is provided.

Volunteers Needed: Strong Kids/Safe Kids

Six to eight (6-8) volunteers are needed to greet visitors and hand our informational materials at Strong Kids/Safe Kids .  This one day event will take place on Saturday, September 25 from 9:00-2:30 p.m.

Volunteers Needed: ARC Art Gallery

The ARC of Schuyler is in need of volunteers for their art gallery located on Franklin Street in Watkins Glen.  Volunteers would greet customers, handle sales transactions, display art,  and other duties as needed.  Volunteers should be friendly, courteous and independent.  Though knowledge of art is preferable, a love of the arts is expected.

The gallery is currently open Friday thru Monday from 11:30-7:30 p.m.  Morning and afternoon shifts are available.

Volunteers Needed: Schuyler Co. Historical Society

If you love history, this assignment is for you! The Schuyler County Historical Society is looking for volunteers to act as docents. Tours run about 10-15 minutes in length. When not giving tours, the volunteers would be asked to do reception work - take calls, answers questions and do data entry on a computer. Training is provided!

The Historical Society has a wonderful collection and anyone the likes history and/or genealogy would really enjoy volunteering there.

Catholic Charities is looking for volunteer receptionists. Duties include answering telephones, making copies, greeting visitors, etc. Volunteers should be personable, able to work independently and have good social skills and telephone etiquette.

Coverage is needed on Wednesdays and Fridays. Morning and afternoon shifts available.

Volunteers Needed: Gardeners

Cornell Cooperative Extension is looking for a small group of volunteers to work in the new community garden at the Human Services Complex in Montour Falls. Duties include: weeding, harvesting, insect scouting and organic control solutions, signage, watering, compost mixing, pruning, pinching, bed preparation, crop rotation, seeding in the greenhouse and weekly reporting.

This assignment will start in early June and run through late September. They expect it will take 4-8 hours /week/volunteer.

Volunteers Needed: Congregate Meal Deliverer

The Schuyler County Office for the Aging is looking for 1-2 volunteers to drive the OFA van to various congregate meal sites in the county.  In addition to delivering the food, volunteers would also serve and clean up.  Volunteers must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.  Motor vehicle screening is required.

Volunteers are needed on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 11:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Volunteers Needed: Kitchen Helpers

The Schuyler County Office for the Aging is looking for 1-2 volunteers to assist nutrition staff with salads, desserts, dish washing, and dining room setup. This Monday-Friday morning assignment is on-going and would begin immediately or as soon as possible. Volunteers can pick and choose which days they would like to volunteer.  Knowledge of food production in a commercial kitchen or school kitchen is desired, but not necessary. Training provided.

Are you a “people-person” who likes to cook? RSVP has a volunteer opportunity for you! Cornell Cooperative Extension of Schuyler County Nutrition Resource Educator Paddy Redihan is looking for volunteers to assist her with cooking demonstrations this summer at the Farmer’s Market and WIC clinics. Paddy’s long-range goal is to train the volunteers to “fly solo” with the demonstrations. She’s hoping to schedule several demonstrations during the summer and fall. This opportunity requires volunteers who are comfortable interacting with people in a public setting. A love of food and cooking will be a big help!
